How Can I Help

| What is Stormwater | Everyday Pollutants | How Can I Help | Monitoring |

Best Management Practices, or BMPs, are things that can be done to minimize the amount of pollutants that enter stormwater, and reach the Jordan River. BMPs include, among others, activities that individuals and a municipality can do:

Individuals

  • Clean up after your pet
  • Clean up spills immediately
  • Fertilize only your yard, not your driveway or sidewalk
  • Wash your car on the lawn or at a commercial car wash
  • SWEEP your driveway and sidewalk, don't hose them down
  • Take old paint, pesticides, solvents and batteries to the Hazardous Waste Facility
  • Compost yard waste such as grass clippings, tree trimmings and leaves

Cities

  • Public education
  • Storm drain inlet identification
  • Storm drain system maintenance
  • Street sweeping
  • Other operational maintenance activities (road repair, salt pile maintenance, roadway deicing, etc.)
  • Program to identify illegal connections or discharges to the storm drain system
  • Ordinances (litter, construction)
